CanAgPlus AGM held in Charlottetown

For the first time, the CanAgPlus Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held outside of Ottawa. The November 28th AGM took place in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The Board made the decision starting in 2019 to take the AGM to different regions of Canada to encourage more member participation across the country.


At its first board meeting, November 29, Stephanie Lariviere was elected chair and Mike Furi was elected vice-chair. Two directors join the board:  Beth Pattillo and Ian McDonell.  Robert Allard was re-elected for another two-year term. 


CanAgPlus, a not-for-profit organization, owns and operates the CanadaGAP Food Safety Program. Members of the corporation are the companies – nearly 3,200 -- that are enrolled in the CanadaGAP program.


The business of the AGM was followed by an interactive “Town Hall”-style listening session for local growers in attendance. The town-hall session was organized to allow members to engage directly with the CanAgPlus Board of Directors and CanadaGAP staff on specific topics of concern to program participants. Growers were invited to provide feedback and ask staff and directors questions about the CanadaGAP program. Approximately 60 local growers took part.


As the program continues to grow and develop, new concerns are brought to light by program participants who are invested in the integrity of the program as a whole. One of the central tenets of the program is that it is designed to be responsive to both emerging science as well as new practices in the horticultural sector. The goal of this collaborative effort—participants, staff, academia, and industry working together—has always been a ready-to-use food safety program for participants that meets customer requirements.
