Alberta potato harvest nipped by snow

Peter Van Giessen harvests potatoes in snowy weather near Coaldale, Alberta.

For potato grower Peter Van Giessen, late September dealt another blow to the growing season in southern Alberta.  About 15 inches of snow dropped on the weekend of September 28 and 29.

“It’s been ridiculous,” says Van Giessen.

He is co-owner of Palliser Potatoes that grows 1,300 acres, both seed and processing near Coaldale, Alberta. The area was hit with a hail storm in late July. About 30 per cent of his acres were affected by hail. This is the second year that snow has snarled the harvest in September. Last year, the snow came a day earlier.

Overall, volumes will be down, but “quality is great,” he says.
